The women see the tomb is empty, and notice the angels (Mk 16:5 Lk 24:3-5a) As they entered the tomb, they saw two angels (who looked like men) dressed in white robes, sitting down on the right side, but the women could not find Jesus' body. Since Luke indicates at least five women were present, an alternative is that some immediately saw the angel (as Mark implies), while others wondered for a while (as Luke implies) before being startled by the angels standing beside them. It is clear that the "men" in Mark and Luke were intended to be understood as angels, because they were dressed in a brilliant white and (more significantly) they had a message from God for the women. Suddenly the angels stood beside them. The women were alarmed and in their fright they bowed down with their faces to the ground.
